Plastic components for the medical and hospital sector

Plastic components for the medical sector: what are they?

Plastic components for the medical sector can be used in both medical furniture and equipment such as, for example:

  • hospital beds
  • medicine cabinets
  • dental units
  • wheelchairs
  • rescue stretchers
  • gynaecological beds
  • podiatry stools

At BMP TAPPI we produce different models of caps, protectors and accessories to meet the demands of the healthcare market. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular types.

From clamps to legs: some of the important plastic components for the medical sector

In the healthcare sector, plastic components fulfil different functions. For example, they can increase the usability of a machine or piece of furniture by improving its fixation, or they can safeguard the safety of patients and operators by ensuring the robustness of medical equipment and avoiding the dangerous exposure of wires.

Here are the most commonly used ones available from BMP TAPPI:

Cable ties in the medical sector

Standard and criss-cross cable ties are useful for bundling machine cables, light or speed-dial wires from medical equipment, which are usually located near the hospital bed or in a dental unit. They can be inserted in the frame, in the footboard or, in the case of the bed, in the control panel of the side rails (on both the patient’s and the operator’s side).

Press-on rivets for hospital equipment

A useful component for the assembling, fastening and closing of hospital equipment components, such as gynaecological beds and stretchers. The press-fit rivet is mainly used by manufacturers, it is easy to install and is compatible with both threaded and threadless holes.

Medical legs

A leg – whether non-slip, adjustable with a nylon or screw-on base – can be used as a leg closure for a hospital bed, a medical storage cabinet, a bedside table, or added to a podiatrist’s chair. Ideally, anti-slip, scratch-resistant and easy-to-clean options should be considered to protect the floor and prevent contact with bacteria. Alternatively, adhesive bumpers can be used.

Medical lighting washers

Resistant to corrosion and moisture, plastic washers dampen vibrations and ensure the connection of screws, bolts and nuts during the pre-assembling of medical lighting panels and luminaires. They can also be used in systems connected to dental unit couches.

Spiral conduits

A spiral conduit is indispensable for joining cables and wires, avoiding dangerous hanging elements, thus keeping the hospital or private medical centre environment safe. It is also ideal in protecting wiring or visible parts, preventing them from being damaged and within reach of people.

Screw caps for hospital equipment

Screw caps can protect exposed screws in both machines and hospital equipment (such as beds, stretchers, gynaecological beds or wheelchairs for patient transport). The cover prevents bacteria from settling in the grooves of the screw head and proliferating. It also prevents clothes from getting tangled up.

Tube inserts

Tube inserts, whether lamellar or smooth, square, round or oval, are inserted into the ends of tubes or protruding parts of hospital furniture or equipment (such as stretchers) to safeguard them.

Paint caps

A company that manufactures hospital furniture and equipment can make use of paint caps during product finishing processes such as shot peening, anodising, painting and plating. They are made of high-temperature resistant materials such as rubber and silicone and are also useful for masking.
