UV-resistant plastic is used in all contexts where ultraviolet rays could interfere with the strength and quality of the material.
Whether it is a cap for an outdoor element or machinery, intense and prolonged sun exposure on components can deteriorate the plastic and the entire mechanism.
The consequences for the business range from slowing down or stopping the production flow, resulting in high maintenance costs, restoration and losing orders.
To counteract and prevent this damaging effect on the material, while protecting your business, you can take several steps. We will discuss them in this article.
What is the UV-resistant plastic
There are certain types of plastic that withstand direct and constant contact with ultraviolet rays. Examples are:
- PTFE (polyvinylidene fluoride), a synthetic polymer with excellent non-stick, chemical, thermal and electrical insulation properties, ideal for seals, even in corrosive environments
- PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride), a semi-crystalline polymer, characterised by chemical and mechanical resistance to atmospheric agents, used for seals
- acrylic, a lightweight, weather-, UV- and impact-resistant material, excellent for access solutions such as hinges
At BMP, you will find a UV-resistant plastic to prevent damage from solar radiation
A UV-resistant plastic such as PTFE, which we use in BMP TAPPI, prevents the consequences of prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The latter, without appropriate precautions, can affect:
- appearance, weakening the colour and, in certain cases, altering the shape of the product
- texture, making the component more prone to cracking and easily breakable
Damage to plastics varies depending on the type of UV light, exposure time and base material. UV can be divided into three types:
- UVA, can break the chemical bonds of plastic polymers, progressively degrading and discolouring the material
- UVB, they accelerate the deterioration of plastics more intensely, with cracks, surface lesions and colour fading
- UVC, are absorbed by the atmosphere, without reaching the earth’s surface
UV protection for plastics
There are alternatives to materials designed to resist ultraviolet rays, preventing damage.
One example is the use of UV protection on the most sun-sensitive plastics, such as polypropylene and low-density polyethylene.

“According to a study published by North Carolina State University, “polypropylene can withstand UV radiation for only six days before losing up to 70 per cent of its strength”.
Specific products such as blockers, stabilisers and varnishes are capable of protecting the plastic material and increasing resistance. Depending on the type, they can be added when mixing the product, or directly onto the surfaces during painting.can be added when mixing the product, or directly onto the surfaces during painting.

UV-resistant plastic caps and plugs: BMP TAPPI solutions
Some industries require plastic components that are highly resistant to ultraviolet rays because they are applied to machinery and vehicles that are constantly in contact with the outside world.
But not all plastics are the same. For example, there is PRC, obtained from post-consumer recycling, low-density polyethylene or PVC.
Choosing the right material for protectors, caps and accessories is essential to keep production running smoothly and prevent breakdowns and slowdowns.
The wind energy sector, for example, requires the use of caps and protectors on turbines, which are exposed to sunlight and weather.
Resistant products must therefore be selected to last longer without compromising the system.
In the BMP TAPPI catalogue you will find items made of PTFE, a material that tolerates UV and, in general, all weather conditions. PTFE manages to keep its properties intact even with prolonged exposure, without fading, staining or deteriorating.
