Is there a difference between rubber and plastic caps? Those who are not familiar with caps might confuse them, but rubber and plastic are very different materials, starting with their composition. Their processing is also different, as is their use in the industry.
To better understand their uniqueness – and which one to choose according to one’s needs – it is necessary to delve into their differences, characteristics and uses. Let’s take a closer look at what this is all about.
Rubber and plastic caps: 3 differences that you should know
The differences between rubber and plastic are based on three main aspects: composition, deformation and processing of the material.
1. Composition of rubber and plastic
Rubber has a natural or synthetic origin. Natural rubber is a very elastic element that is obtained from certain plants, including Hevea brasiliensis (an Amazonian tree). Synthetic rubber is composed of elastomers or neoprene and nitrile, in varying proportions. Plastic, on the other hand, consists of polymers, including polyethylene.
Their different composition affects the consistency: plastic is solid and compact, while rubber is more flexible.
2. Deformation of rubber and plastic
Those who produce plastic and rubber caps have to deal with the deformation of the material. The elasticity of rubber can reach 1000% or more, while that of plastic usually does not even get close to 100%. What does this mean? Rubber can recover its original shape, while plastic cannot (although it is still very versatile and durable).
3. Rubber and plastic: different processes
Usually, rubber is molded. A process that precedes the vulcanization process used to increase resistance to abrasion, high temperatures, tensile forces, wear and tear and weathering.
To create plastic caps, on the other hand, injection molding machines are mainly used. In this process, the plastic material is melted and injected into a closed mold until the product solidifies.
The main characteristics of rubber and plastic caps: differences and peculiarities
Rubber and plastic caps are distinguished by their composition, as well as by their processing. But what are the main characteristics of each product?
Rubber caps are:
- elastic
- lightweight
- flexible
- durable
- robust
Synthetic rubber is also abrasion resistant and suitable for applications that involve extreme temperatures.
Plastic caps, on the other hand, are:
- lightweight
- durable
- reliable
- stable
- robust
- suitable for extended use
Plastic offers greater rigidity and stability than rubber. Moreover, if recycled correctly, it can support the environment, thus dispelling various fake news and beliefs circulating about this component.
Major areas of use for rubber and plastic caps
Thanks to their resistance to high temperatures and deformation, rubber caps guarantee an effective seal and are often used as protection for components during painting, sandblasting and other processes. They are used in a variety of sectors, especially in the medical, pharmaceutical and food industries, as well as in the automotive industry.
Plastic caps, on the other hand, are resistant to temperatures (high and low), weathering and corrosion. They can be used to close and protect various components in order to prevent contamination and contact with dust, dirt and debris. They are easy to assemble and disassemble, perfect for both long-term applications and a temporary solution (such as transporting products). For their versatility and durability, they are chosen in a variety of fields, from hydraulics to automotive and pneumatics.
Silicone: a material not to be underestimated
Among the various types of synthetic rubber is silicone, a lightweight silicon derivative known for its versatility. It is waterproof, crushproof and heat-resistant. Because of these characteristics, silicone caps are increasingly used as protection for threads and other parts of machinery, surfaces or products, during painting and drying processes and in galvanic, cataphoretic and galvanizing treatments.
BMP TAPPI: customized solutions and commitment to sustainability
At BMP TAPPI we have a warehouse with over 500 million pieces in stock to meet the needs of every sector. If a particular cap is not in our catalogue, or if our customers need special shapes, colors and performance, we can work together to develop a customized product to meet their needs.
All our plastic, rubber and silicone caps are functional, available in various shapes, sizes and models (including universal types). They are easy to install and their cost is reasonable and affordable.
At BMP TAPPI we are very conscious of the environment and, for us sustainability matters. We have created:
- a range of products made from materials of PCR origin (from consumer/end user waste) and PIR origin (from industry-generated waste)
- a range of fully biodegradable technical caps, and we are working on a BIO material production for our flagship products.
